Syngas Testing: Methods, Standards, and Best Practices

Unlike natural gas, which is extracted from underground reservoirs, syngas is manufactured through controlled industrial processes.

How Syngas Is Produced

Syngas Test Several industrial technologies are used to produce syngas.

Gasification

Gasification converts solid carbonaceous materials into combustible gas using limited oxygen or steam at temperatures generally between 700°C and 1,500°C. Common feedstocks include coal, wood chips, biomass, agricultural waste, refuse-derived fuel, and municipal solid waste.

Steam Reforming

Steam reforming is widely used for producing hydrogen-rich syngas from natural gas. In this process, methane reacts with steam over a catalyst at high temperatures to produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide.

Partial Oxidation

Partial oxidation involves reacting hydrocarbons with a controlled amount of oxygen. Since only part of the fuel burns, the remaining carbon is converted into carbon monoxide while hydrogen is simultaneously produced.

Autothermal Reforming

Autothermal reforming combines steam reforming and partial oxidation in a single reactor. This process balances heat generation and heat consumption, making it suitable for large-scale industrial hydrogen production.
